Meet Robert J. McCunney, MD, MPH, MS: Physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Lung Center

Boston, Massachusetts – Dr. Robert J. McCunney, clinical, research and teaching focus for the past 40 years has been occupational and environmental disease. As a member of Brigham’s Lung Center, Dr. McCunney brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in evaluating and treating occupational and environmental lung diseases, along with other exposure-related health problems.

Dr. McCunney, who also serves as a part-time Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and a research scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health, has dedicated his career to advancing the understanding and management of lung diseases linked to workplace and environmental exposures. His commitment to patient care and education positions him as a vital asset to both the hospital and the wider medical community.

After earning his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1976, Dr. McCunney completed a residency program in internal medicine at Northwestern University Medical Center and Faulkner Hospital. He further honed his specialized skills through a fellowship in occupational and environmental  medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health. He holds a Master Degree  of Public Health from the prestigious Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; he also holds a master of science degree in environmental health from the University of Minnesota. He has been board-certified in occupational and environmental medicine since 1983.

Dr. McCunney’s clinical research is focused on the effect of occupational and environmental hazards and their impact on lung health. As the author and co-author of over 125 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters he has made significant contributions to the field of occupational and environmental medicine. He has also served as editor-in-chief of five major textbooks. His role as a peer reviewer for various medical publications underscores his commitment to the dissemination of high-quality research.

Honored with the Health Achievement Award and the Presidential Award from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Dr. McCunney is recognized as a leader in his field. His extensive experience and dedication to patient care make him a valuable addition to the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lung Center, where he continues to advocate for the health of individuals affected by occupational and environmental lung diseases.
