Retired Dentist Leaves Legacy of Excellence in Geriatric Care and Education

Wharton, Texas — Garland S. Novosad, DDS, a respected dentist with over five decades of experience, has retired from his successful dental practice, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to geriatric care and dental education. Since he began his practice in 1973, Dr. Novosad has specialized in general dentistry, with a particular focus on removable partials and dentures for the elderly population.

Born in 1948 in Wharton, Texas, Dr. Novosad pursued his educational dreams with vigor. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Baylor University in 1969, followed by a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1973. His commitment to excellence in his field led him to complete a fellowship in removable prosthodontics, equipping him with the skills necessary to serve his patients effectively.

Throughout his career, Dr. Novosad was not only a practitioner but also an educator, sharing his knowledge with future generations of dental professionals. He served on the faculty of several esteemed institutions, including Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and the University of Washington Health Sciences Center in Seattle. For nearly 30 years, he was a vital part of Wharton County Junior College, where he instructed courses in Pharmacology, Head & Neck Anatomy, Periodontology, Nutrition, and General and Oral Pathology.

In addition to his contributions to dentistry, Dr. Novosad has been actively involved in local governance and community service. He has held elective offices, including City Councilman and Mayor, showcasing his commitment to public service. His leadership qualities were recognized when he was named among the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1981.

Dr. Novosad’s influence extended beyond his dental practice; he was deeply involved in community development, organizing seminars for the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Forums and serving on the Texas Jobs Training Coordinating Council, appointed by Governor William P. Clements. Currently, he holds the position of President of the Wharton Independent School District Board of Trustees, continuing his dedication to education and community welfare.
