Nia’s Inspiring Journey: From Nursing Student to Forensic Nursing Leader

Willoughby and Painesville, Ohio – Nia Long, BSN, RN, SANE-A, a dedicated nursing professional, is making significant strides in the field of forensic nursing, driven by her unwavering commitment to advocacy for survivors of sexual violence. Her educational journey began at Gilmour Academy, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kent State University in 2018. Currently, she is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing with a focus on Forensic Nursing at Aspen University, expected to graduate in December 2024.

Nia’s professional career took off at the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, where she gained invaluable experience in surgical oncology. This foundational role solidified her passion for patient care and led her to transition into postpartum nursing, where she nurtured her dedication to the well-being of mothers and infants. Her career then evolved into a Nurse Home Visitor role with the Nurse-Family Partnership, providing essential nursing support to first-time mothers and their infants in underserved communities.

Driven by her passion for women’s health, Nia embraced the challenges of forensic nursing. She began with a PRN position at the Cleveland Clinic, which paved the way for her current role as the full-time Adult Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Lead at University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center in Willoughby, Ohio and TriPoint Medical Center in Painesville. In this position, Nia leads initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and supporting victims, underscoring her commitment to this critical area of nursing.

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Nia is an active member of several professional organizations, including the International Association of Forensic Nursing (IAFN) and the Academy of Forensic Nursing (AFN). Her involvement extends to the Lake County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence (OAESV), alongside her membership in the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) and the Alliance to End Human Trafficking, where she continues to contribute her expertise to important causes in forensic nursing and legal advocacy.

Nia’s contributions to the nursing profession have not gone unnoticed; she is a proud recipient of the prestigious Daisy Award, recognizing her exemplary nursing practice. She attributes her success to her supportive family and her passion for making a positive impact on her patients. 

In her leisure time, Nia enjoys going to the movies, visiting new parks, attending plays, and traveling, always seeking new experiences and opportunities to explore the world around her.
