After an illustrious 31-year career in clinical practice, Dr. Alan M. Atkinson, DO, FACOI, FCCP, FAASM, transitioned into retirement in July 2017, with exciting plans to leverage his vast expertise in pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders in non-clinical roles. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions to the field, serving as a key member of Pulmonary and Critical Care Consultants, PLLC in the Lansing, Michigan area for the last 25 years.
Graduating from Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry in 1977, he went on to complete his medical education at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree in 1981. His commitment to excellence is exemplified by his board certifications from the American Board of Sleep Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Atkinson has garnered numerous accolades for his dedication to patient care and medical education. He is a lifetime member of the American Osteopathic Association and has achieved Fellow status in several prestigious organizations, including the American College of Osteopathic Internists, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. His leadership roles included serving as Medical Director at the Sparrow Sleep Center and as a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at both the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Human Medicine.
In addition to his clinical practice, he played a vital role as the Assistant Program Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship (Osteopathic) at Sparrow Hospital, contributing to the training and development of future physicians. His dedication to medical education has left an indelible mark, inspiring countless students and residents. He is now eager to explore part-time opportunities in medical writing and teaching.
