Elizabeth K. Arleo, MD, FACR, FSBI, FAAWR: A Pioneering Force in Women’s Imaging and Radiology Mentorship

New York, New York – Weill Cornell Medicine proudly recognizes Dr. Elizabeth K. Arleo, MD, FACR, FSBI, FAAWR, for her exceptional contributions to the field of radiology, particularly in women’s imaging. As a Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medicine an Attending Radiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Clinical Imaging, Dr. Arleo has established herself as a leader in both clinical practice and research, while also advocating fiercely for women in the medical profession. 

Dr. Arleo completed her Bachelor of Arts at Yale College and earned her Medical Degree from Yale School of Medicine in 2004. After an internship in internal medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, she completed her residency in diagnostic radiology during her residency at NewYork-Presbyterian | Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Following a fellowship subspecializing in women’s imaging, Dr. Arleo joined the radiology faculty in 2010, where she has since made significant strides in advancing the field. Her clinical expertise encompasses breast and body imaging, where she interprets a range of studies, including mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs. Recognized for her outstanding clinical work, Dr. Arleo received the prestigious Distinguished House Staff Award from the Department of Radiology in 2007.

In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Dr. Arleo’s research endeavors have delved into critical topics related to women’s imaging and the role of women in radiology and medicine. Her commitment to education and research has garnered numerous accolades, including the Distinguished Educator Award from the New York Roentgen Society in 2018. Her influence in the field was also acknowledged when she was a semi-final candidate for AuntMinnie.com’s Most Influential Radiology Researcher in 2013.

On a national level, Dr. Arleo has played an integral role in various organizations, including the American Association for Women Radiologists (AAWR) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). As the 2019 President of AAWR, she championed initiatives aimed at improving paid family medical leave (PFML) in radiology. Her involvement with multiple ACR commissions underscores her dedication to enhancing breast imaging, diversity, and human resources within the field.

Dr. Arleo is also the Founder and Director of the Mentorship Program for Women in Radiology at NYPH/WCMC, a program sponsored by the President’s Council of Cornell Women’s Leadership Fund. Her mentorship efforts have earned her several accolades, including the Laurie H. Glimcher, M.D. Award for Excellence in Mentoring Women Faculty in 2017, the New York Roentgen Society Distinguished Educator Award in 2018, and the Alice Ettinger Distinguished Achievement Award from AAWR in 2022, recognizing her lasting contributions to the field.

Dr. Arleo resides in Manhattan with her husband, three children, and their Labrador retriever. She is also a published book author, with her first book, “First, Eat Your Frog: And Other Pearls for Professional Working Mothers,” debuting on International Women’s Day in 2023; a children’s book series (target audience: 12-26 months) is seeking a publisher. When not engaged in her professional pursuits, she enjoys reading, traveling, and running.
