Jeffery J. Machat, MD, FRCSC, DABO, an esteemed and double board-certified ophthalmologist, marks over three decades of excellence in laser eye surgery. Serving as the Medical Director of The LASIK Vision Institute with offices in Memphis, Tennessee, and Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Machat has dedicated his career to enhancing patients’ vision and well-being.
To date, Dr. Machat has performed over 108,000 laser eye procedures, including surgeries on close to 700 eye doctors. He has long been recognized as the surgeon that doctors select for themselves. Dr. Machat’s journey in ophthalmology began in Toronto, Canada, where he graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School. He gained early experience with LASIK in Bogotá, Colombia, the birthplace of the procedure, and began performing LASIK on February 4th, 1991 in Canada, five years before it received FDA approval in the United States. Today, Dr. Machat has a well-earned reputation as a world authority and one of the leading innovators in LASIK refractive surgery.
His profound understanding of the patient experience is further enhanced by his personal journey; Dr. Machat has undergone laser eye surgery himself. “I use a lot of anesthetic and talk continuously through each step of the ten-minute surgery. People are always amazed at how much easier and faster LASIK was than they expected,” he explains. With the advancements in LASIK technology, he assures that the procedure is exceptionally safe and accurate. Even after 34 years, Dr. Machat states “I love what I do, I love helping people through their LASIK journey, giving them incredible vision and changing their lives.”
Dr. Machat’s expertise is not only in performing surgeries but also in educating future surgeons. He has trained over 3,000 surgeons in various laser vision correction techniques and has lectured in more than 24 countries across five continents. His extensive research includes working with 23 different excimer laser models and 16 femtosecond laser systems, marking him as a key figure in the evolution of LASIK technology and custom LASIK treatments.
An active member of prestigious organizations such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (Fellow), the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American-European Congress of Ophthalmic Surgery, Dr. Machat is committed to upholding the highest standards in ophthalmology.
