His early work focused on building client rapport and applying cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques to treat various psychological conditions. 

In 1996, Dr. Cuesta took on a postdoctoral resident role in clinical neuropsychology at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, where he specialized in assessments and treatments for patients with traumatic brain injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. His role as a staff neuropsychologist at the Traumatic Brain Injury Unit at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center further solidified his expertise in providing clinical neuropsychological assessments and treatment for brain-injured patients and their families.

Dr. Cuesta’s tenure at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, New York, from 1999 to 2010, marked a pivotal point in his career. As the Director of Rehabilitation Psychology and Neuropsychology, he played a critical role in developing the department, supervising clinical staff, and mentoring psychology students. His dedication to clinical research and publication has contributed to the advancement of knowledge in the field, showcasing his commitment to the betterment of psychological practices.

In addition to his extensive clinical work, Dr. Cuesta has served the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where he provided invaluable neuropsychological assessments and psychotherapy services to veterans. From 2010 to 2015, he was Director and Supervisory Psychologist at the Manhattan Vet Center Program, focusing on the treatment of combat veterans facing complex physical and psychological challenges, including PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. His service earned him recognition for his unwavering commitment to improving the well-being of those who have served in the military.

Dr. Cuesta’s military experience as a Captain in the Medical Service Corps of the United States Army Reserve during Operation Iraqi Freedom reflects his dedication to serving active-duty soldiers and their families. Most recently, Dr. Cuesta took on the role of clinical psychologist at the Metropolitan Hospital Center in East Harlem, New York City, where he continues to provide critical mental health support.
