Hershey, Pennsylvania – After a 44-year career as a physician-educator, James O. Ballard, MD, FACP, has officially retired, leaving behind a legacy in the fields of internal medicine and hematology. Dr. Ballard’s dedication to patient care, medical education, and the advancement of humanistic values in healthcare has influenced countless students and practitioners throughout

his remarkable journey.

Dr. Ballard’s educational path began at West Virginia University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Medicine, followed by obtaining his Medical Degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His commitment to excellence was further demonstrated through his residency training at Georgetown University Medical Center and the University Hospitals of Vermont. He later specialized in hematology, completing fellowships at both Georgetown University Medical Center and Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where he developed a particular interest in coagulation disorders.

In 1973, Dr. Ballard served as a Major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, gaining experience that shaped his medical career. He joined Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1978 as an attending physician, a position he held for 41 years, providing exemplary clinical care to patients with benign and malignant hematologic disorders.

A dedicated educator, Dr. Ballard began his academic career at Penn State College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1978. His dedication to teaching and mentorship led to his promotion to Associate Professor and later to full Professor of Medicine. His commitment to education was further recognized when he was awarded the Jane W. and Lawrence F. Kienle Chair for Humane Medicine in 1990, a position he held for nearly three decades.

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Ballard was instrumental in shaping the curriculum and fostering a culture of compassion and humanism in medical education. He served as Interim Chair of the Department of Humanities from 1999 to 2002, demonstrating his leadership and vision within the institution.

In 2019, Dr. Ballard was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus of Humanities, Medicine, and Pathology, reflecting his ongoing contributions to the academic community, which he

continues to support in a part-time capacity.

Dr. Ballard’s exemplary service has not gone unrecognized; he has received numerous accolades throughout his career. These include the Exceptional Moments in Teaching award from Penn

State College of Medicine in 2019 and the Outstanding Humanities Facilitator Award in 2018. His commitment to humanistic care in medicine was recognized with the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 2010.

As Dr. James O. Ballard embarks on this new chapter of his life, he leaves behind a legacy of compassion, excellence, and commitment to the humanistic values in medicine. His contributions to the field of hematology and medical education will be felt for many years to come.
