Carlson, MSN, BSN, RN, CRN, NE-BC, FACHE as the Executive Director of Ambulatory Surgery Centers, effective June 2023. In her role, Janet is responsible for overseeing the clinical footprint of Commonwealth Pain & Spine, which includes the simultaneous development of multiple de novo Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) throughout the region. Her strategic vision aims to expand access to high-quality pain management services while ensuring that care remains affordable and accessible for all patients.

- Strategic Leadership: Janet supports the organization’s mission and vision by contributing to strategic planning and ensuring the attainment of fiscal goals. She plays a crucial role in compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements, and AAAHC standards. Janet has also served as a consultant for the strategic development of service lines, including Total Joint Replacement and Complex Spine Surgeries.
- Team Management and Development: Known for her approachable leadership style and emotional intelligence, Janet effectively manages clinical teams to recruit and retain highly skilled staff. She is committed to mentoring her direct reports, fostering an environment of growth and development, and maintaining a 100% Physician Net Promoter Score (NPS) from 2018 to 2022.
- Tactical Excellence: As the primary liaison for de novo ASCs, Janet ensures the provision of therapeutic and value-based care in a holistic and evidence-based environment. Her innovative approach includes the migration of the SI Joint Fusion procedure to the ASC in 2018 and the establishment of preceptorship agreements with local nursing programs to train future healthcare professionals.
- Quality, Safety, and Compliance: With a strong focus on quality improvement, Janet utilizes evidence-based best practices to enhance clinical operations across all units. She is dedicated to transparency through the publication of infection data on the ASC website and actively incorporates patient feedback to improve outcomes and recovery times.
Janet’s academic journey began at Miami University, where she studied Zoology/Animal Biology and played field hockey. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Old Dominion University, graduating Cum Laude. Her passion for healthcare led her to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Old Dominion University, also graduating Cum Laude and becoming a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Janet continued her education at the University of South Carolina, earning a Master of Science in Nursing in Nurse Executive, Organizational Leadership, and Development, graduating Summa Cum Laude.
In addition to her role at Commonwealth Pain & Spine, Janet is actively involved in the Women Business Leaders (WBL) of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation, where she collaborates with senior executive women to advance leadership opportunities within the industry. As a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) since 2016, she is committed to healthcare leadership and organizational excellence.
Janet’s contributions to healthcare have been widely recognized. Under her leadership, The Surgery Center at Midlands Orthopaedics & Neurosurgery achieved the distinction of being ranked #3 Orthopedic ASC in the Nation in 2022, as recognized by Newsweek, Statista, and Becker’s ASC Review. Additionally, the center was named the #1 ASC in South Carolina twice, first in 2021 and again in 2022, and became the first ASC in South Carolina to receive the BCBS Blue Distinction + for Spine Surgery in 2020.
