Arthur Fournier: A Beacon of Hope in Global Health Initiatives
Renowned Physician and Educator, Dr. Fournier, Continues His Lifelong Mission to Combat Health Inequities
Project Medishare proudly acknowledges Dr. Arthur Fournier, one of its co-founders, whose extensive contributions to global health and education have transformed lives in underserved communities both in South Florida and Haiti. With a remarkable career that spans over four decades, Dr. Fournier’s pioneering efforts in primary care education and community health initiatives have become a model for addressing health disparities.
Dr. Fournier’s journey began at Merrimack College and Tufts Medical School, followed by a residency at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In 1976, he served as a commissioned officer in the US Public Health Service, dedicating his early career to improving health on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. His academic tenure at the Miller School of Medicine commenced in 1978, where he excelled as a professor of family medicine and internal medicine, and later as associate dean for community health.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Fournier has been a driving force behind innovative primary-care education models aimed at delivering preventive and primary health care to marginalized populations. His initiatives, including health fairs, school health, community health workers and model teaching clinics, have provided essential services to minorities, inner-city schoolchildren, the homeless, migrant farmworkers, and immigrants.
In 1994, Dr. Fournier co-founded Project Medishare with Dr. Barth Green, further solidifying his commitment to improving health conditions in Haiti. Over 200 trips to Haiti have enabled him to supervise medical student volunteers and provide vital patient care. His groundbreaking work in establishing a family medicine residency program for Haitian physicians, supported by a grant from the Open Society Institute, has left a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape of the nation.
Dr. Fournier’s literary contributions, including “The Zombie Curse”, “Vodou Saints,”, “Hope Makes Us Live” and most recently, “Intern!”, reflect his personal experiences and dedication to combating the AIDS epidemic, and fostering primary care, with all proceeds from his writings benefiting Project Medishare.
