Dr. Eric D. Martin: A Compassionate Leader in Vascular Surgery

Providing Exceptional Care with a Personal Touch

Dr. Eric D. Martin, one of the country’s finest board-certified vascular surgeons, is committed to delivering exceptional, quality, comprehensive patient care, emphasizing a family-like approach to healthcare. He understands that before patients want to know how much their doctor really knows, they want to know how much their doctor really cares. With extensive training and experience in the military, combined with his civilian experience in Illinois, he aims to ensure that every patient feels heard, respected, and informed throughout their medical journey.

“A family member with a little bit more medical knowledge,” is how Dr. Martin describes his approach to patient care. He firmly believes in the importance of listening and fostering open communication. “I will always take the time to educate my patients, empowering them to make informed decisions about their health,” he says. Dr. Martin currently serves as the chief of vascular surgery at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois – a large tertiary care, 800-bed level one trauma center.

In addition to performing vascular surgery and using open, endovascular, and hybrid techniques to treat the most challenging vascular pathology, Dr. Martin has earned a niche and reputation as one of the country’s leading authorities in advanced regenerative reconstruction and stem cell therapy. This dedication to patient-centered care has earned him accolades, including the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and the Aurora Award in regenerative medicine for the country’s top expert in regenerative reconstruction. Dr. Martin is recognized for his contributions to medical education and research. He has received multiple teaching excellence awards from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and has been honored by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons for his research contributions.

Dr. Martin is a member of several professional organizations and has earned “fellowship distinction” in the American College of Surgeons, American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, and the Society of Vascular Surgery. His commitment to ongoing education and professional development ensures that he remains at the forefront of advancements in vascular surgery. He is a member of the University of Illinois College of Medicine assisting the general surgery resident program at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, IL. Dr. Martin currently is enrolled in two research projects on regenerative reconstruction with limb salvage increasing amputation-free survival and regenerative medicine used for prevention of wound dehiscence with sternotomy incisions in high-risk cardiac patients.

Academically, the doctor completed his medical education at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1994 before pursuing further training in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Ohio State University Medical Center, affiliated with Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. His passion for vascular surgery led him to a fellowship at the prestigious Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2010.

With more than 24 years of service in the U.S. Armed Forces. Dr. Martin was trained and selected for US Army Special Forces and served in the 10th SFG (A) at Fort Carson, Colorado, in the late 90s into the early part of the millennium. He also served with distinction and honor with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), working as part of an elite four-man surgical resuscitation team at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He completed a three-year tour, deploying down range to hostile combat zones in a wartime environment. Dr. Martin brings a unique perspective to his practice, having dedicated his career to the health and well-being of others, taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves – “De Oppresso Liber”.

Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Martin enjoys bodybuilding, skydiving, scuba diving, and bike riding. His diverse interests reflect his adventurous spirit and dedication to a healthy lifestyle.
