Dr. Huzella is the second child of Hungarian immigrants who through their lives as medical professionals, helped steer her down her chosen path of Ophthalmology. Dr. Huzella’s mother, Dr. Emma Domoszlai, MD, was a physician that had expertise in family practice, pediatrics, and genetic diseases and was Kinga’s role model and inspiration. Dr. Huzella’s medical journey began when she graduated Cum Laude from Duke University with a Bachelor of Science degree while also working as a research assistant in the Duke University Department of Genetics.
Upon returning home to Western New York, Dr. Huzella pursued graduate studies in pathology at the Roswell Park Cancer Research Institute of the State University of New York. She then earned her medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, (formerly known as SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences), graduating Magna Cum Laude. She simultaneously pursued research interests in glaucoma with the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Huzella completed her internship in internal medicine at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, VA. She then completed her residency in ophthalmology at The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in New York, where she was named Chief Resident during her final year.
As Chief Resident, Dr. Huzella was responsible for mentoring and overseeing the training of other ophthalmology residents. During her residency, she also completed the Lancaster Course in Ophthalmology at Colby College, did in-depth training in the treatment of uveitis at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, participated in an ocular oncology clinic at Long Island College Hospital, and attended an ophthalmic pathology course sponsored by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at the Georgetown University Medical Center.
During her professional career, Dr. Huzella served as Staff Ophthalmologist at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for one year, as well as serving as the Attending Ophthalmologist (training ophthalmology residents) back at Brookdale Hospital for 3 years. She worked two more years as a General Ophthalmologist with Brooklyn Medical Group, P.C. in New York, before she moved to Maryland to join Southern Maryland Ophthalmology, located in Waldorf, Maryland. Dr. Huzella, along with her associate, opened the upscale Breton Bay Optical Shop in conjunction with the Leonardtown branch of Southern Maryland Ophthalmology, which brought state-of-the-art ophthalmology to Saint Mary’s County.
To stay abreast of the latest advancements in her field, Dr. Huzella is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Hungarian Medical Association of America (co-chairman of the social committee), Women in Ophthalmology, the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons (chairman of the membership committee), Ophthalmic Women Leaders, Member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the Maryland State Medical Society. She has also been an active participant in The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Eye Care America, an award-winning organization that provides eye exams and eye care to eligible individuals through volunteer ophthalmologists; and The Carroll Creek Rotary Club, which is comprised of professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and build goodwill and peace in the world.
Dr. Huzella and her husband, Dr. Louis M. Huzella, a veterinarian, are both avid supporters of Frederick Memorial Hospital and members of the Order of the Good Samaritan promoting healthcare excellence in Frederick County.
Highly regarded in her field, Dr. Huzella has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards including: The Frieda W. Trust Scholarship for Proficiency and Dedication to the Field of Ophthalmology; the American Medical Women’s Association Janet Glascow Citation for Scholastic Achievement; graduated as one of the top students in her medical school; the Award for Outstanding First Year Resident in Ophthalmology; the honor of being selected as Chief Resident in her senior year of training; and numerous Top Doctor Awards.
A keynote speaker, Dr. Huzella has presented at the Allied Health Optometry Conference 2018 Eyes on Ebola COPE Course ID: 59409-SD Continuing Education and Workforce Development Hagerstown Community College, Hagerstown, MD; and Speaker at the 47th Annual HMAA Medical Conference in 2015: The Consequences of Surviving Ebola Virus Disease Emphasis on a case study with ophthalmologic impact.
She has received Certificates of Appreciation from EyeCare America for being a volunteer ophthalmologist from 2000 until 2019; Recognized as a Top Doctor by Find a Top Doctor 2015 to 2019; and now for her dedication to Ophthalmology and for achieving excellence in patient care, Dr. Huzella is a lifetime member and bearer of the prestigious title “Patient Preferred Top Ophthalmologist.”
Dr. Huzella is bilingual in English and Hungarian and proficient in French and German. When she is not treating patients, she loves spending time with her husband, Dr. Louis M. Huzella, a retired army helicopter pilot and currently a veterinary pathologist with the National Institutes of Health, and their five children Alexa, Erika, Athena, Chris, and Pete, and caring for their multiple rescue animals.
