Dr. Johnson completed his undergraduate degree from Wheaton College in Illinois. Furthering his education, he attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine where he graduated with his Medical Degree in 1980, giving him over three decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed his internship with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, followed by his general surgery residency with the Mercy Hospital & Medical Center and Anesthesiology residency with the Navy Hospital, San Diego, CA. Wanting to further his training, he then completed his regional anesthesiology/pain management and thoracic anesthesiology fellowship. Additionally, he attended the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt and received his Executive Master of Business Arts Degree in 1996.

Dr. Johnson is dual certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Pain Medicine. Additionally, he is recognized as a fellow of Interventional Pain Practice by the World Institute of Pain. Dr. Johnson is a respected author, editor, and lecturer. He has served on several international missions of mercy for Operation Smile. He currently practices as the President and Medical Director of Rinova Wellness. He is a former associate professor of Anesthesiology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and previously served as the director of the Vanderbilt Pain Center. He is also a former president of the Southern Pain Society, and currently serves as the secretary of the Tennessee Chapter of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to pain relief and total care of the surgical patient before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. An anesthesiologist evaluates, diagnoses, and treats all different types of pain. Pain medicine is a subspecialty which addresses a wide spectrum of disorders including acute pain, chronic pain, and cancer pain and sometimes a combination of these. Pain can also arise for many different reasons such as surgery, injury, nerve damage, and metabolic problems such as diabetes. Occasionally, it can even be the problem all by itself, without any obvious cause.
