Gwendolyn is a registered nurse who is retired from practice. During her active years on the job, she served as a Nurse Manager at Madigan Army Medical Center, located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord just outside Lakewood, Washington. As one of the largest military hospitals on the West Coast of the United States, it is a key component of the Madigan Healthcare System.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Gwendolyn earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington in 1976. Since then, she has gained diverse experience within the field of nursing, including working within the cardiac step-down unit and providing preoperative care for pediatric patients. 

At present, she manages Ebony Nurses Association of Tacoma, whose primary mission is to provide financial assistance and scholarships to students of African American Heritage who pursue studies leading to careers in professional nursing.

A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

Gwendolyn attributes her successful career to having always wanted to be a nurse, helping others, and making a difference in their lives. Now enjoying retirement, she lives in Lakewood.
