Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Zhongxing Liao, who serves patients in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Liao is a respected radiation oncologist who uses ionizing radiation and other modalities to treat malignant and benign diseases. She serves as Deputy Department Chair of Clinical Research, Deputy Department Chair of Clinical Affairs, and Professor within the Department of Radiation Oncology, Division of Radiation Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.

Among her institutional committee activities at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, she is a member of the Executive Committee for Medical Staff; the Steering Committee for China, Extramural Program; and the Asia Task Force, Extramural Program. Prior to her current endeavours, she served as the Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center from 2007 until 2016. 

A 1982 graduate of Hunan University of Chinese Medicine in China, Dr. Liao relocated to the United States following her graduation. Once there, she completed a research fellowship in experimental radiation oncology and a clinical fellowship in radiation oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1993 and 1994, respectively. A year later, in 1995, she completed a clinical internship in internal medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita.

Wanting to further her training, she completed a clinical residency in radiation oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1999. She then went on to complete several programs relating to her field, including a Clinical Safety and Effectiveness Program, at the same educational venue throughout the years, leading up to 2015.

Before long, she became board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology, which is a not for profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.  

A seasoned professional, Dr. Liao’s research interests focus on improving the therapeutic ratio of radiation therapy for thoracic malignancies through translational research. Specifically, her efforts focus on personalizing chemoradiotherapy for lung cancer by reducing treatment-related toxicity, and increasing cancer cure rates by using predictive biomarker strategies and advanced radiation delivery technology. She has continued her leadership role in conducting practice-changing clinical trials locally and nationally.

Accumulating rich experience and knowledge, the doctor’s most significant contributions in research include the following: successfully designed, led, and completed the first of the kind prospective randomized trial comparing IMRT and proton therapy for lung cancer; established a bio-specimen repositories for biomarker research and facilitate translational research; became a national leader in clinical trials on proton therapy; and expanded research collaborations with imaging, symptom research, and behavior science.

To date, Dr. Liao remains a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (Membership Committee of the Board of Directors, 2006 – present), the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the American Radium Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Radiology Society.

In light of her various achievements, she is the recipient of The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award by the American Association for Women Radiologists, the Outstanding International Collaboration Award by the Chinese Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (2007), and the Outstanding Contribution to Radiation Oncology Education for China Award by the Chinese Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (2007). 

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties, the other two being surgical and medical oncology, involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.
