Brett J. Teague, MD, an Ophthalmologist with Big Country Eye Center
Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Brett J. Teague, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.
Since 1996, Dr. Teague, a board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, has been providing premium medical and surgical eye care to the fine folks of the Big Country. He is the Founder of Big Country Eye Center with two offices in Abilene and one office in Snyder, Texas.
Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Teague serves as a Clinical Associate Professor within the Department of Ophthalmology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and as a Clinical Preceptor with the Physician Assistant Program at Hardin-Simmons University.
A native of Manhattan, Kansas, he went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from Baylor University, followed by his medical degree from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock. This was followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a fellowship in glaucoma at the University of Oklahoma.
During his years of medical training, Dr. Teague was the recipient of many awards, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (limited to those in the top of their medical school class).
A Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO), the doctor is an active member of the Texas Medical Association and the Big Country County Medical Society. In addition, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology, whose mission is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.
In his professional experience, Dr. Teague has been Chief of Ophthalmology at Hendrick Medical Center. He has taught and presented lectures at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Additionally, he is involved with the Body and Soul program at Abilene Christian University, which allows pre-medical students to shadow local Abilene physicians.
Very involved in ophthalmology mission work, Dr. Teague has traveled to the nation of Ghana in West Africa on multiple occasions with Christian Eye Ministry to perform cataract, glaucoma, and cornea transplant surgeries. In 2007, he accompanied a group from Abilene Christian University to Guatemala, where he performed eye surgery. He is now very involved with the Zambia Medical Mission (based in Abilene) and has traveled to Zambia on three different occasions to perform eye surgery. To date, he has performed around 700 sight-restoring and sight-saving surgeries in the third world.
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
In his personal life, Dr. Teague is married to the former Jill Getson Teague. He is the proud father of four daughters and two sons, as well as the proud grandfather to nine grandchildren. He is a deacon in his church.
His hobbies include mountain climbing, swimming, bicycling, photography, and computers. He has competed in numerous century bicycle races (100 miles in distance), triathlons (including two Ironman races), and mountain climbing. He has summited many of the most difficult state high points, as well as has summited Africa’s highest peak (Mount Kilimanjaro) and Europe’s highest mountain (Mt. Elbrus).
