Dr. Alvarez is a highly respected Bariatric Surgeon with over fifteen years of expertise in weight loss surgery, general surgery, as well as laparoscopic surgery. He continues to provide exceptional service to his patients at Sage Bariatric Institute in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Alvarez began his illustrious career in 2003, after earning his MD from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara, where he graduated with top honors and earned clinical rotations in Baja California and Chiapas. He also holds a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of the Incarnate World, after which he gained hands-on patient care experience across the country, including Honolulu and Miami. He has also held a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Dr. Alvarez finished his five-year residency in General Surgery at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in New York City, where he served World Trade Center victims as a chief resident and leader in trauma, acute care, and vascular care.

At Sage Bariatric Institute, Dr. Alvarez continues to offer his patients a wide variety of robotic and laparoscopic options for treating obesity, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and gastric balloon. He is dedicated to motivating each and every patient he sees to live a good, healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Alvarez attributes his ongoing success to hard work and persistence. He is an active member of the American Medical Association and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. When he is not serving patients, Dr. Alvarez enjoys playing the piano, listening to music, and playing basketball and baseball.
