Margaret was inspired to choose a career in nursing by her wonderful high school teacher, Mamie Hammock, who was a nurse and taught a health vocational class. “She was amazing and taught us as if we were going into the nursing field. The field of nursing, as she taught, was empowering, a continuum of learning, and a person could in fact make a difference in others lives.”
Pertaining to her nursing background, Margaret worked for a retail giant, gaining six years of experience with four years as a pharmacy technician, and earning her certification as a CphT. While in nursing school at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, she continued to work in the pharmacy setting, having moved up into a hospital environment pharmacy at Redmond Regional Medical Center/Cartersville Medical Center, both HCA facilities.
As a new graduate nurse in 2015, she began her nursing career at Hamilton Medical Center in the Renal/Oncology Department. She then moved on to Kindred of Rome, a long-term acute care facility that specialized in a variety of specialties, including vent weaning and wound care, both minimal and extensive. With the opportunity to return to Redmond Regional Medical Center, this time as a nurse, Margaret did just that and further grew her career in the orthopedics/neurology area. She had the opportunity to work in additional patient care areas as needed and she did just that in order to help build her knowledge base and experience.
“I left the staff nursing scene to continue my growth in my career in travel nursing assignments to build on nursing opportunities and further contribute to my education.As a travel nurse, I have gained/added to experience in areas to include orthopedics, neurology, gastroenterology, Covid, medical-surgical nursing, Ltac, wound care, step down, and telemetry. I have been to different states and hospital settings, and have embraced different cultures, nursing techniques, and practices” expressed Margaret.
Expanding her learning base, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the Chamberlain University College of Nursing in 2020. In addition to holding certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), she is a Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN).
A firm believer that motivation takes on many forms, Margaret is motivated by the more complex wounds to the unusual syndromes unlearned or never encountered, never letting her teammates down or herself, as well as learning as much as she can each day, each shift, and with each patient. Her research interests include: wound care and GI quality improvement.
Being an advocate for her patients is how Margaret strives to make a difference in their lives. She believes that sometimes, patients need someone else on their side who can be their voice when no one else can. “I am passionate about what I do and I am always looking out for my patients and their safety, best care, and best interest. Every situation is different and the NURSE is oftentimes the only person the patient has, making sure the patient is, in fact, FIRST.”
A Registered Nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license.
