A highly skilled hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Nikolinakos’ passion is driven by the bonds he builds with his patients and their families and the enjoyment he holds in helping others. He is the Managing Partner at University Cancer & Blood Center (UCBC) in Athens, Georgia.
In his current capacity, he serves as the Director and Principal Investigator of UCBC’s clinical research program which conducts numerous trials involving novel targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and breakthrough cancer treatments. He is also affiliated with Harmony Medical Center and Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
Holding an academic rank, he is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.
Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Nikolinakos graduated with his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Debrecen in Hungary in 1996. Upon relocating to the United States, he performed his residency at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital, where he served as the Chief Medical Resident. After completing his fellowship in hematology and oncology at the NCI designated MD Anderson Cancer Center where he conducted basic science as well as clinical and translational research, he joined UCBC in September of 2009.
Triple certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology, the doctor is board-certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Specializing in hematologic oncology, Dr. Nikolinakos is experienced in amyloidosis, thrombocytopenia, myelodysplasia, myelofibrosis, and multiple myeloma. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
An author and cancer researcher, Dr. Nikolinakos has published on a variety of clinical and basic science cancer topics in The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Cancer Research, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Oncogene, the American Journal of Hematology, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Public Library of Science, and the Journal of Thoracic Oncology. His numerous abstracts have been presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
A recipient of the 2013 ASCO Clinical Trials Participation Award, he is the recipient of On-Time Doctor Award (2015, 2016, 2018), Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015, 2016, 2018), and Patients’ Choice Award (2015, 2018).
Outside of practicing medicine, Dr. Nikolinakos enjoys traveling to Greece to see his family and finds special interest in photography.
