He sees patients in the Memphis office every Tuesday and is in surgery the rest of the week. Surgeries are done at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis and Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital.
Specializing in vascular and general surgery, his areas of clinical expertise include open and endovascular aortic and peripheral artery procedures; carotid artery endarterectomy; carotid stent placement – both standard and trans-catheter carotid artery repair; cardiothoracic surgery including heart, lung and major vessels; heart transplant and cardiac assist devices; and robotic mitral valve surgery.
Alongside his clinical role, he serves as a Professor of Surgery within the Department of Surgery & the Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
An expert in his field, Dr. Garret, Jr. continues his father’s tradition of cutting edge firsts and involvement in new technology, including: first lung transplant in Memphis; first double lung transplant in Tennessee; first mother-daughter living lung donor in Memphis; first robotic case at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis; first abdominal aortic aneurysm repair with stent graft in Memphis; first thoracic aortic aneurysm repair with stent graft in Memphis; performed the first cardiomyoplasty in Memphis; implanted the first Abiomed ventricular assist device in Memphis and had the longest living patient supported on the device; first left ventricular assist device XVE, HMII, Thoratec IVAD and PVAD in Memphis; first Paracor Heartnet placement in Memphis; performed the first Minimally Invasive Convergent Maze Procedure at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis; first transcatheter aortic valve placement in the Mid South; first TCAR (Transcarotid Artery Revascularization) in the region; and first MitraClip in the region.
In regards to his educational background, Dr. Garrett graduated from high school at Memphis University School, and then received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Vanderbilt School of Medicine, followed by a residency in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He returned to Memphis to complete a residency in vascular surgery at the University of Tennessee.
A member of numerous associations and organizations within his field, Dr. Garrett, Jr. serves on boards and is a strong contributor in many ways. He is an active member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, the Association of Operating Room Nurses, Mid South Transplant, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Southern Association for Vascular Surgery, the Southern Surgical Association, the Christian Medical Society, the American College of Surgeons, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, the Association of Program Directors in Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, the International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery, and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
One of the leading experts in his field, he is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Furthermore, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.
