A native of India, Dr. Chandrani obtained her premedical certification at Teresian University College in 1980, and graduated with her medical degree from Mysore Medical College in 1986. She earned her diploma in obstetrics & gynecology from Karnataka Medical College, and went on to complete a residency in internal medicine and surgery at Bangalore Medical College in 1989.
Following this, she relocated to the United Kingdom where she conducted her fellowship in obstetrics & gynecology at Walsgrave Hospital and Good Hope Hospital. Upon completing her fellowship in 1995, she relocated to the United States where she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine, and her fellowship in hematology/oncology at the Cabrini Medical Center in 1998 and 2001, respectively.
Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.
Among her most notable achievements, Dr. Chandrani has been the recipient of the First Prize Award for her Paper Presentation in the Graduation Ceremony at Cabrini Medical Center (June 2001). She has also received an Award for Contributing Immensely to Resident Education at NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst (June 2010), a Physician Recognition Award for Outstanding Service to the Community by Senator Michael N. Gianaris (November 2015), and a Certificate of Appreciation by the CEO and Medical Director of NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst and the Cancer Committee (June 2017).
Her publications include “Minor Histocompatibility Antigen and Prevalence of Graft Versus Disease in Patients with Allogeneic BMT”, submitted for the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunocytogenetics, as well as Complete Resolution of Low Grade Ocular Lymphoma with Fludarabine, published in Blood Journal as abstract in November 1999.
Happily married, Dr. Chandrani and her husband, Dr. Ravichandra, have a son, Arjun, and twin daughters, Anjali and Aishwarya. In her free time, she enjoys working out, cooking, and traveling. She is fluent in both English and Hindi.
