Mayra is a certified physician assistant and orthopedic specialist currently serving her patients at Direct Orthopedic Care in Round Rock, Texas.
Direct Orthopedic Care (DOC) was established as a stand-alone, walk-in orthopedic urgent care facility in Boise, Idaho in 2014. DOC provides direct access high-quality orthopedic specialist care allowing patients to completely bypass the long visit time and high costs associated with an emergency room visit.
Born and raised in Brownsville, Texas, Mayra received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The University of Texas at Brownsville in 2010. After completing her undergraduate studies, she was accepted to the UT Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and graduated with a Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) in 2014.
An active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, she attained her Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) credential by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). The NCCPA is the only certifying organization for physician assistants in the United States. Established as a not-for-profit organization in 1974, it provides certification programs that reflect standards for clinical knowledge, clinical reasoning and other medical skills and professional behaviors required upon entry into practice and throughout the careers of physician assistants.
Prior to her career as a physician assistant, Mayra completed a research internship at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, focusing on health-related problems resulting from long term space missions. Her career in medicine then took her to Laredo, Texas where she practiced internal medicine before transitioning into sports medicine, in which she treated a wide array of sports-related injuries and developed a passion for the field of orthopedics.
A Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) is a health care practitioner who practices medicine in collaboration with physicians. PAs are medical professionals, educated in the medical model to complement physician training, and assist the physician in many aspects of the practice. PAs are trained to take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and assist in surgery.
On a more personal note, Mayra is new to the Austin area and is excited to be a part of the local medical community. She is a dog lover and enjoys community outreach, running, yoga, and traveling.
