Juan Reyna, MD, a Urologist Who Is Retired From Practice
Get to know Urologist Dr. Juan Reyna, who served patients in Texas.
A practicing urologist, Dr. Reyna is the Founder and President Emeritus of Urology San Antonio, one of the largest urology groups in the United States.
As such, he provides counsel and support for the business functions of the practice, and has taken it upon himself to be the ambassador and champion of the practice’s outreach and community-focused initiatives.
Educated in the United States, Dr. Reyna earned his undergraduate degrees from San Antonio College and the University of Texas Pharmacy School. He then went on to graduate with his medical degree from the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine in 1975 and completed his surgical internship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He returned to his hometown, San Antonio, for his residency in urology at the UT Health Science Center, where he was the first Mexican American to complete the program.
Subsequent to his training, the doctor attained board certification in urology through the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.
In 1981, Dr. Reyna opened his urology practice as a solo practitioner in downtown San Antonio. Through recruitment and mergers, he grew the practice to include 30 urologists, a radiation oncologist, and approximately 200 employees. He served as the group’s President and CEO for 30 years before stepping down in May of 2012.
In November of 2012, Urology San Antonio, in recognition of Dr. Reyna’s 31 years of service, moved to change the name of their cancer center from the San Antonio Cancer Center to The Dr. Johnny Reyna Center for Cancer Treatment.
From November 2013 until November 2014, Dr. Reyna served as president elect for the Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA), a national organization representing the interests of nearly 2100 urologists in 120 large group practices across the country.
Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
Giving others opportunities for success is a driving value for Dr. Reyna. He is a founding member of the Mexican American Hispanic Physician Association, an organization that empowers minority students to pursue careers in health care. He has also served on numerous boards for businesses, hospitals, and professional associations in San Antonio and at the national level.
Named a Texas Super Doctor from the years 2005 to 2011, his expertise in managed care and group consolidation has allowed him to give presentations on these topics all over the United States and in Mexico and Panama.
