Richard Southgate, MD, an Orthopedic Surgeon with Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital
Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Richard Southgate, who serves patients in Illinois.
Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Richard Southgate is a fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon educated at University of Chicago, Mayo Clinic, University of Rochester, and University of California San Francisco. Dr. Southgate specializes in hip replacement through the anterior as well as posterior and lateral approaches; both partial knee and total knee replacement; and complex primary & revision hip/knee surgery. He likes to use the latest surgical technology where applicable from computer navigation and robotics to custom knee implants.
What attracted him to focusing on joint replacements was the pronounced effect on the quality of life of the patients. Another draw to this field of orthopaedics is the patient population: working with those well into retirement age is especially rewarding for Dr. Southgate as he feels that the elderly population can sometimes be overlooked in our society. Regardless of age, his main goal for all patients is treating them like family while getting them back to their hobbies and being as independent as possible. Dr. Southgate strongly believes that the precise treatment plan varies based on the individual patient and shared decision-making is paramount in determining a plan of care. Some patients derive a lot of benefit from non-operative treatments such as anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, bracing, injections, or – in specific instances – regenerative medicine. When surgery is indicated, Dr. Southgate likes to employ the principles of personalized arthroplasty: no two people are identical and thus each patient needs his/her own individualized surgical plan. Rapid recovery protocols are employed in most patients, enabling them to convalesce from the comfort of their own home. Additionally, limited or non-narcotic (non-opioid) pain plans are offered to as many patients as possible.
Dr. Southgate joins Northwestern from the West Coast where he was in private practice. During his time there, he was site director (core faculty) for orthopaedic surgery residents from Oregon Health & Sciences University and medical director for Arrowhead Orthopaedics. He has published several book chapters on hip fractures as well as peer-reviewed journal articles on a variety of topics. Dr. Southgate is fluent in Spanish and has used that skill on various medical missions throughout Latin America with Operation Rainbow and Operation Walk. In his spare time, he enjoys watching college football, running, hiking, bicycling, discovering new restaurants, and exploring Lake County and Chicagoland as a whole.
