Get to know Registered Practical Nurse Stephanie Maria Horner, who serves patients within Chartwell Grenadier Retirement Residence and O’Neill Centre.

Stephanie Horner is a highly-respected and experienced Registered Practical Nurse, having been in practice for over seven years, as a nursing student, and more recently licensed with the College of Nurses of Ontario in 2017.  As a new RPN with the nursing team at O’Neill Centre Long Term Care since February 2019, Stephanie enjoys the challenge and learning opportunities of this new position as Unit Supervisor while subsequently embracing a second new position as RPN with Grenadier Retirement Residences.  As Stephanie sees it “this is a new chapter in my career with great leadership potential and nursing skills as I work with a geriatric patient population.” In 2018, Stephanie served patients at Amica Mature Lifestyles, Amica at Bayview Retirement Community, one of the largest Amica senior communities.  Stephanie is noted for her expertise in Wellness Nursing, Geriatrics, and Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care in retirement homes. As a RPN with the Amica nursing department, Stephanie was noted to demonstrate qualities of being “professional, efficient and compassionate” during challenging family and client situations.  Stephanie also practices as RPN with various retirement homes and long-term care communities in Toronto and the GTA with Book Jane since Aug 2018. In summer 2017, Stephanie gained valuable pediatric experience as charge nurse on site, successfully working in collaboration with family physicians at a summer camp in beautiful Cardiff, Ontario where she demonstrated leadership, excellent clinical skills and flexibility to role expectations, and a compassion for treating emergency first aid injuries and other health concerns for campers and staff in her care.  Stephanie also gained valuable experience in 2017 with Arcadia Home Care specializing in support and well-being for a client with an Acute Brain Injury and responsive behaviour triggers. Noted for an effective development of a therapeutic relationship and trust with the client, Stephanie quickly became respected with the agency and the client’s family including expansion of her role in subsequent care for the client as RPN, Personal Support Worker, and Rehab Support Worker. Stephanie has also gained diverse experiences with St Elizabeth providing hospital PSW staff relief for major hospitals.        

Stephanie’s career as a nurse began in 2011, upon graduating with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from George Brown College & Ryerson University. In 2016, Stephanie completed her Registered Practical Nurse Refresher Certificate (with Hons) from Humber College. As a nursing student, Stephanie cites many fantastic placements and a wide array of experiences, including previous clinical practicum at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, Macaulay Child Development Centre and Lakeside Long Term Care Centre, among others.  Throughout these clinical placements, Stephanie was consistently noted to have “a positive attitude and excellent therapeutic relationships with colleagues and patients”.

In order to stay current with the ever-changing advancements in her field, Stephanie maintains a professional membership with the Registered Practical Nurses Association of Ontario (RPNAO) and enjoys many opportunities to take part in the association’s  conferences and workshops and has been garnered with numerous certificates commemorating her success in Wound Care, Coronary Care Nursing, IV therapy & Phlebotomy, and Physical Assessment as well as her recent professional development endeavors such as Suicide Prevention First Aid training and education with Alzheimer’s Society in Dementia Care and Gentle Persuasive Approaches training in 2018.  The commitment to nursing continuing education is a goal Stephanie embraces with every new learning experience as she continues in her nursing career journey. Apart from working, Stephanie enjoys vacationing, volunteering including previous overseas volunteering in Central America, theater and the arts, long-distance running, cycling, and yoga in order to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.  Stephanie has enjoyed the challenge of numerous long-distance racing including achieving medals for the Scotiabank Half Marathon and more recently the 30K Around the Bay race in Hamilton in March 2018. Stephanie looks forward to the Hamilton challenge again in 2019 when she will run her second 30K race!
