He then went on to complete a residency in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Hospitals in 1991. This was followed by a residency in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 1989 and a residency in thoracic surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in 1993. 

In 1994, Dr. Kerr became board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) – an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge. A year later, he became board-certified in thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS) – an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest. In 2016, he became board-certified in surgical critical care by the ABS. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, the doctor remains a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and a Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians (FCCP). 

Cardiothoracic surgery (also known as thoracic surgery) is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax (the chest)—generally treatment of conditions of the heart (heart disease) and lungs (lung disease).
