Joseph Mathew, MD, FACP, FCCP, Joins Valley Medical Group as Chair of Medical Specialties, Enhancing Pulmonary Care in New Jersey

Valley Medical Group is pleased to announce that Dr. Joseph Mathew, MD, FACP, FCCP, a distinguished pulmonologist, has joined the organization as the Chair of Medical Specialties. Dr. Mathew sees patients at VMG Respiratory and Pulmonary Medicine in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he aims to provide exceptional care in the management of respiratory conditions.
With a robust clinical background, Dr. Mathew specializes in treating a variety of respiratory ailments, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pneumonia, and pleural effusion. His expertise extends to respiratory tract infections and point-of-care ultrasonography, ensuring comprehensive care for his patients. Dr. Mathew is dedicated to delivering personalized, high-quality treatment, working closely with his team to foster a collaborative, team-based approach to healthcare.
Dr. Mathew earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from New York University in 1999 and went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine Degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2004. He completed his residency in internal medicine, including a chief residency at Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside, in 2008. Following this, he pursued a fellowship in pulmonary diseases and critical care medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, finishing in 2011.
Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine, Dr. Mathew is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the American Thoracic Society, staying abreast of the latest advancements in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
Prior to joining Valley Medical Group, Dr. Mathew held multiple leadership roles at the Mount Sinai Health System, including Associate Chief Medical Officer and Director of the Center for Advanced Medical Simulation. He will continue his academic involvement as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
“While I practice evidence-based medicine based on the latest research, I still think of medicine as an art where the care has to be tailored to each individual patient based on their individual needs,” said Dr. Mathew. “I am excited to join the team here at Valley and be a part of the expansion and growth of Valley Health System, with the new hospital and development of graduate medical education programs.”
An accomplished author, Dr. Mathew has published several manuscripts and book chapters, and he serves as an ad hoc reviewer for several prestigious journals. His impressive accolades include the ACCP Young Investigator Award, the Distinguished Chest Educator Award, and the United Health Fund Excellence in Healthcare Award, among others.
Outside of his professional commitments, Dr. Mathew enjoys spending quality time with his family, cheering on his sons, Evan and Aaron, at their sports games and practices.
