Psychiatric nursing or mental health nursing is the appointed position of a nurse who specializes in mental health and cares for people of all ages experiencing mental illnesses or distress. In the United States, a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC) is an advanced practice registered nurse who holds board certification and is trained to provide a wide range of mental health services to patients and families in a variety of settings. PMHNPs diagnose, conduct therapy, and prescribe medications for patients who have psychiatric disorders, medical organic brain disorders or substance abuse problems. They are licensed to provide emergency psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessment of their patients, treatment plans, and patient care. They may also serve as consultants or as educators for families and staff.

On a more personal note, Abby lives in the Greater Boston area. When she is not helping her patients, she enjoys running, gardening, playing acoustic guitar, singing, and hiking. Her favorite place to vacation is in Aruba.
