Get to know Nocturnist Dr. Ajay Koirala, who serves patients in West Reading, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Koirala serves as a nocturnist at Reading Hospital, a 738-bed non-profit teaching hospital located in West Reading, Pennsylvania. With a focus on providing comprehensive medical care during overnight hours, he plays a crucial role in ensuring continuous and specialized attention to patients’ needs.

Educated in Nepal, Dr. Koirala graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery Degree from Manipal College of Medical Sciences in 2011. That same year, he commenced his medical career as a House Officer at Mechi Zonal Hospital in Nepal, followed by a brief stint at Manmohan Memorial Eastern Regional Community Hospital in 2013. He continued his house officer roles in 2013-2014 at Om Sai Pathibhara Hospital and Research Center.

Transitioning to the United States, Dr. Koirala volunteered as a Doctor at the Baltimore Rescue Mission Clinic in 2015. The same year, he served as a Clinical Observer at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland, and also took on the role of a Clinical Medical Observer in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University. 

In 2015-2016, Dr. Koirala worked as a Research Associate/Volunteer in the Department of Neurology at the University of Maryland. Finally, from 2016 to 2019, he served as a resident in internal medicine at Reading Hospital.

Attributing his success to hard work and perseverance, the doctor is board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

On a professional level, Dr. Koirala is an active member of the American College of Physicians, the Nepal Medical Association (life member), the Nepal Medical Council, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Berks County Medical Society, the Society of Hospital Medicine, and the American Thoracic Society.

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. A nocturnist is a hospital-based physician who only works overnight. Most nocturnists are trained in internal medicine or family medicine and have experience in hospital medicine. However, there are nocturnists trained in other specialties, such as pediatrics.

On a more personal note, Dr. Koirala’s favorite places to vacation include Nepal, Ocean City in Maryland, and Disney in Florida. When he is not immersed in his medical pursuits, he indulges in hobbies such as cricket and soccer.
