Alex M. Gerber, DO, FAOCO, an Ophthalmologist with Koch Eye Associates

Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Alex M. Gerber, who serves patients throughout the State of Rhode Island.

Dr. Gerber is a board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologist. He serves as the Medical Director of St. James Surgery Center, Koch Eye Associates, and Koch Eye LASIK and Aesthetics Center – all of which are located in Rhode Island.

Specializing in cataract, refractive cataract, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, and LASIK, Dr. Gerber sees patients for comprehensive and diagnostic eye exams and their surgical aftercare. He performs lens replacement surgery, laser cataract surgery, LASIK, and other types of surgical corneal reshaping. His expertise includes both bladeless (laser) and sutureless cataract surgery, as well as microinvasive glaucoma surgery.

Previously, he served as the medical director of the Greater New Bedford Surgery Center, and as one of the leading investigators in clinical trials ongoing at Koch Eye Associates. 

Throughout his academic career, Dr. Gerber completed his undergraduate studies cum laude at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 2001 where he earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. He then pursued his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and received honors in genetics studies. He went on to do his residency at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Queens, New York where he became chief resident. During his fellowship at Koch Eye Associates, he received extensive training in cataract surgery, LASIK, and other types of refractive surgery under the supervision of Dr. Paul Koch.

Passionate about his profession, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. It is a joint organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the eye (ophthalmologists) and to qualified DOs who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose, and throat (otolaryngologists).

On a professional level, Dr. Gerber is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology (FAOCO).

With a strong interest in the most innovative and new techniques in his field, as well as new technology, his work has been published in medical journals. He has also served as a speaker at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

When not hard at work, Dr. Gerber enjoys spending quality time with his wife, his two daughters, and his boxer. He is fluent in both English and Russian.
