Alfred W. Forrester, MD, a Psychiatrist in Private Practice

Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Alfred W. Forrester, who serves patients in Timonium, Maryland.

Dr. Forrester is an adept psychiatrist who has been in private practice in Timonium, Maryland since 1997.

He sees patients for diagnostic evaluations and medication management, focusing mainly, but not exclusively, on affective disorders, anxiety disorders, adjustment disorders and ADHD. Most of the work which he does with them is based on referrals from non-physician therapists or non-psychiatric physicians.

“The work that I do is collaborative – with both the patient and the referral source. I maintain an exclusively office-based practice and remain current with the state-of-the-art pharmacotherapies. I also treat some patients in intermediate or long-term psychotherapy myself” expressed the doctor.

A 1979 graduate of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Forrester went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital in 1982. He then furthered his training with an additional residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in affective disorder at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1985 and 1986, respectively.

Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification in psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

With a breadth of clinical and research experience, Dr. Forrester encompasses both public and private sectors, in academic, inner city clinic, hospital, and outpatient private practice settings. He has provided internal medical support on the inpatient services at the Bon Secours Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland; he has been a full-time attending psychiatrist at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital; he was the first director of Psychiatric Services at the Chase-Brexton Health Services; and he addressed mental health and addiction issues among the undergraduate population while serving as a consulting psychiatrist at the Towson University Counseling Center.

Currently, he serves as the Medical Director of the Maryland Addiction Recovery Center. As such, he has been instrumental in keeping the Center at the forefront of the changing landscape of addiction medicine and how to implement medication interventions alongside the evidence-based clinical approaches used by the clinical team of therapists.

“The integration of biopsychosocial and medical care, a focus on the development of personal educational and occupational goals, and our patients’ successful reintegration into society are hallmarks of the program at MARC of which we should be proud. However, just as important as the care of our patients is the component of community outreach: to date, in the form of providing family-oriented psychodynamic work and psychoeducation; and, moving forward, providing guidance to the educational needs of our followers: social workers, psychologists, medical students and physicians. I consider myself extraordinarily fortunate to have become an integral part of this dynamic organization” stated Dr. Forrester.

A Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, he is also a member of the Maryland Psychiatric Society, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, and the American Medical Association.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

Having achieved much throughout his career, Dr. Forrester has contributed to many articles in professional journals on the topic of affective symptomatology observed among patients following closed head injury, spinal cord injury, and myocardial infarction. As a result, he has been acknowledged for his work by publications such as Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
