Andrea Hayes, MD, an Endocrinologist with Naples Diabetes Concierge

Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Andrea Hayes, who serves patients in Naples, Florida.

Dr. Hayes is a prominent, board-certified endocrinologist with a private practice – Naples Diabetes Concierge – in Florida. She is committed to devoting her time and energy to a specific group of patients that desire a personal, up-scale approach to the management of diabetes and other endocrine conditions.

Considering the restrictions inherent in the contemporary medical office environment, Dr. Hayes desires to provide diabetes and endocrine care to her patients in a more intimate, personal way. She desires to truly get to know her patients and their families and to be accessible to them to meet their medical needs.

In a concierge medical practice, the physician makes a commitment to limit the number of patients in the practice so that adequate time is available for an enhanced level of care. Extended, unrushed visits will allow Dr. Hayes the luxury of spending plenty of quality time with her patients, also allowing access to her between regularly scheduled visits.

A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. Hayes experienced a life-changing event at the age of 15. After a few weeks of frequent thirst, frequent urination, and weight loss, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. This diagnosis proved shocking to her and her family as no other family member had been diagnosed with this disorder. Tools to manage Type 1 diabetes were cumbersome and not effective in achieving tight blood glucose control. At age 19, she began wearing an insulin pump which provided a continuous infusion of insulin into the body. This helped her immensely but fell quite short of the technologies available to treat diabetes today.

Shortly into her college years at Auburn University, Dr. Hayes made the decision to pursue medicine with the goal of becoming an endocrinologist. This career path proved to be a natural fit. She attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham. She then moved to Nashville and performed a three-year internship and residency in internal medicine through the University of Tennessee, Baptist Hospital. Acknowledging that Vanderbilt University had acclaimed excellence in the field of diabetes, she chose to perform her three-year fellowship there, engaging both in clinical research and patient care.

With the aid of her father, she started Hayes Endocrine and Diabetes Center in 1997. Her practice served middle Tennessee for over 24 years as a large, state of the art practice. She then transitioned her practice from a traditional, insurance-based practice to concierge medicine in Naples, Florida.

Since Dr. Hayes was diagnosed, the treatment of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes has revolutionized. She feels incredibly grateful that she has witnessed such a progression in research and technologies and genuinely enjoys sharing these treatment options with her patients. Her goal remains to help patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders live healthy and abundant lives.

“My stories are endless. My calling continues to be fulfilled. Developing diabetes in my youth was not a random event. This event, no matter how bleak things looked at the time, has given me an immense passion and calling for treating others in my situation. My life has been filled with numerous highs and lows but thankfully the highs have won the battle. I want your highs to win the battle too” as stated by the doctor.

A Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, Dr. Hayes is board-certified in diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
