Intensive care medicine, also called critical care medicine, is a medical specialty that deals with seriously or critically ill patients who have, are at risk of, or are recovering from conditions that may be life-threatening. A pediatrician who specializes in pediatric critical care medicine is an expert in advanced life support for children from the term or near-term neonate to the adolescent. This competence extends to the critical care management of life-threatening organ system failure from any cause in both medical and surgical patients, as well as to the support of vital physiological functions. This specialist may have administrative responsibilities for intensive care units and also facilitates patient care among other specialists.

Locally, Dr. Meyer served on the grant committees such as the IIMS Translational Science Training TL1 Program, IIMS and School of Medicine Pilot Projects, posters for the San Antonio Post-doctoral Research Forum, and Medical Student Research Day. He serves as a member of the UTHSCSA Institutional Review Board with specific expertise in pediatric studies. Lastly, he is the longest serving member on the University Hospital Research Committee, serving as chair several times a year.

A peer reviewer for the ASAIO, Transfusion, and AJRCCM, and Thrombosis Research, Dr. Meyer is on the editorial board of the Journal of Extracorporeal Technology (JECT). His national grant review service includes the NICHD Special Committee on Small Business Research Grants (SBIR) in Pediatrics, NIH CSR on Pediatric, Endocrine, and Reproductive SBIR (R43/R44), Congressional Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), and the American Heart Association.

Happily married with two children, Dr. Meyer is Cubmaster of Pack 59 at Alamo Heights Methodist Church and also practices pottery at the Southwest School of Art.
