Transforming Nursing Tutoring and Patient Support at Grand Canyon University and VISN Clinical Contact Center

Lexington, Kentucky – Angela Clay, DNP, MSN-ED, RN, is making significant strides in the nursing field as a Registered Nurse Nursing Tutor and RN Telephone Triage specialist affiliated with Grand Canyon University and the VISN Clinical Contact Center. Her multifaceted role combines nursing education and patient care coordination, aiming to support both aspiring nurses and healthcare professionals in their daily practices.

Angela’s expertise in virtual nursing tutoring covers essential nursing topics critical for licensure, including medical-surgical nursing, pharmacology, health assessment, and critical care. Through her innovative approach, she provides students with the knowledge and confidence necessary to excel in their nursing careers. “I am passionate about empowering the next generation of nurses,” says Angela. “Tutoring allows me to share my knowledge while fostering a supportive learning environment.”

In addition to her tutoring responsibilities, Angela plays a crucial role in triaging patient concerns within various healthcare systems. She is adept at initiating virtual appointments, managing medication refills, and activating emergency services when needed. Her work ensures that patients receive timely care, while her educational efforts help them understand procedure preparations, post-surgical care, and diabetes management, including continuous glucose monitoring systems.

Supporting six VA hospitals within VISN 9, Angela’s responsibilities include providing triage assistance, verifying patient information, and serving as a resource for primary care procedures and community care consults. “Collaboration is key in healthcare,” Angela explains. “I work closely with pharmacy services, crisis centers, and poison control to ensure comprehensive support for our patients.”

Angela’s educational journey reflects her commitment to the nursing profession. She began by earning an Associate in Applied Science at Lexington Community College in 1999, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2012. Her pursuit of knowledge continued with a Master of Science in Nursing Education in 2017 and culminated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Grand Canyon University in 2020.

An active member of the Kentucky Nurses Association and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, Angela attributes her success to her desire to be a positive role model for her grandchildren, inspiring them to pursue their own goals with dedication and perseverance. She also credits her mentorship from Melissa Richardson, Nurse Manager, during her BSN program, whose guidance played a crucial role in shaping her career and professional growth.

Angela Clay is truly a beacon of dedication in the nursing community, exemplifying the impact of education and compassionate care in the healthcare system.
