Dr. Caprio is a seasoned general surgeon serving as a Physician Advisor at Holyoke Medical Center. It is a full-service, community and regional non-profit medical center located in Holyoke, Massachusetts. 

Holyoke Medical Center has 198 beds in the main hospital and runs a comprehensive healthcare system that includes the VNA, River Valley Counseling Center, and Western Mass Physician Associates, a physician practice group. Holding a medical degree from the University of Roma-La Sapienza / Faculty of Medicine And Surgery, Dr. Capio continued his training in the United States. He completed his residency in general surgery at Jersey City Medical Center, followed by his fellowship at Holyoke Medical Center.

In practice for over four decades, he also has a distinguished military service and has served proudly in the United States Navy. In 2013, he was honorably discharged with the Rank of Commander.

Throughout his fruitful career, Dr. Caprio has held many administrative positions, including Chief Medical Officer at CarePoint Health System; Medical Director of Care Management at Hoboken University Medical Center; Physician Advisor at Holyoke Medical Center; and member of the Valley Health System.

The doctor’s commitment is seen by becoming board-certified through the American Board of Physician Executives and the American Board of Medical Quality (where he holds the role of Chairman). He also attained membership status with the American College of Medical Quality and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care. 

Throughout his training and practice, Dr. Caprio has received multiple awards for medical research and has published many peer-reviewed research papers. He has presented the results of his research at conferences both nationally and internationally.
