Get to know Neurological Surgeon Dr. Arianne J. Boylan, who serves patients in Connecticut.

A seasoned neurological surgeon, Dr. Boylan serves patients at Hartford HealthCare Medical Group, specializing in neurosurgery and spine surgery. She can be found practicing at The Ayer Neuroscience Institute at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT, as well as The Ayer Neuroscience Institute – Spine Wellness Center in Westport, CT. When she joined the Spine Wellness Center in Westport in March 2021, Dr. Arianne Boylan became the first female neurosurgeon at Hartford HealthCare Network.

“I think all doors are open. I think if somebody has a dream or a passion, you should just keep chasing it. And you’re going to hit some roadblocks along the way, all of us do no matter what our background. But just continuing to believe in yourself and finding those moments that for you make it worthwhile,” says Dr. Boylan. With only 1 in 20 neurosurgeons across the country being women, Dr. Boylan believes giving women a chance is so important. “I’m a neurosurgeon who just happens to be female, I’m not a female neurosurgeon”, she says.

“At Hartford HealthCare’s Ayer Neuroscience Institute, we’ve taken the concept of a second opinion to a new level. Each week, all our specialists—neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, neurointensivists, neuro-critical care nurses, EEG Techs—meet to review each individual case. Together, they pool their knowledge and experience to give you the most advanced treatment plan possible”, states the official website of Ayer Neuroscience Institute.

As a neurosurgeon, Dr. Boylan specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, Chiari malformations, degenerative spine disease, hydrocephalus, spine deformities, spine tumors, and more. Some of the procedures she performs include cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine surgery, complex spine surgery, CAS (Computer Assisted Surgery), minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, and revisional surgeries.

A 2008-graduate of  Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Boylan completed her internship and neurosurgery residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center at Boulder, CO, and Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI (2008-2014). She then advanced her training with her fellowship in spine oncology at Detroit Medical Center, as well as a fellowship in spinal deformity at Yale University School of Medicine.

Following her training, she attained board certification in neurological surgery through the American Board of Neurological Surgery. The broad aim of the American Board of Neurological Surgery is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery, and thereby to serve the cause of public health..

Dr. Boylan is a member in good standing of several professional organizations, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Women in Neurosurgery, the North American Spine Society, Member, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
