Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Arthur Fine

Dr. Fine is a renowned expert in the field of general surgery, garnishing over 36 years of experience.

Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Fine graduated with his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 1981. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center McKeesport Hospital.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

To further his professional development, he remains an affiliate of several organizations, including the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons which appointed him Chair of the Committee on Colon Surgery.  He has also been an editor of the Society’s peer-reviewed journal reviewing submissions in Hernia Surgery, a subject he has been published in, and Colon surgery, likewise a major contributor to the field.

Having served as a Major in the United States Air Force, Dr. Fine was a trauma surgeon where he commanded a surgical mobility team, taught in the field for the combined service’s Combat Casualty Care Course and was later called back into active service for Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He remains very proud of his time spent in the military.

That was also the year that the first laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed in the US.  Dr Fine realized the potential for other procedures and, receiving funding for lab work, went on to be one of the first three surgeons in the world to perform a minimally invasive colon resection and the first to publish a series describing and chronicling the procedure for colon cancer,  the article presaged both the questions and the answers that would later be further researched. Owing to this, he was invited by the National Cancer Institute to be on the panel of ten surgeons nationwide that would form the initial COST study group.  They published their combined initial date giving the impetus and justification for this type of surgery to become what is today the standard of care.

Dr. Fine was drawn to the obscure finding of the potential for tissue regeneration by the ubiquitous but heretofore unappreciated potential of extracellular tissue matrix.  With the approval of the first commercially available matrix, he researched its potential and then proved its usefulness in healing the intentionally open abdomen, now used in pediatric multivisceral organ transplant patients,  and in the routine repair if inguinal and “sports” hernias, niw often cited and in the case of sports hernias, utilized. He lectured nationwide on the subjectif tissue engineering and has been sought after by publications for quotes of his opinions on research in the field.

Dr. Fine started his career as a trauma surgeon and has come full circle back to that, becoming a full time trauma surgeon for various high level trauma centers nationwide and is currently a sought after trauma surgeon in the Denver, Colorado region.

At his side is Danielle, equally sought after as a professional dancer, and soulmate.
