From Academic Excellence to Transformative Contributions in Healthcare and Community Engagement

Ashley Illingworth, MT, MSHA, PA (ASCP), DHSc, is making significant strides as a Pathologists’ Assistant in the Department of Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, Mississippi. With a robust educational background and a deep commitment to both healthcare and community service, Dr. Illingworth has established herself as a leader in her field.

Her academic journey began at the University of Iowa, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology in 2010. She then advanced her education at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, obtaining a Master of Science in Health Administration and a Master of Science in Pathologists’ Assistant Studies in 2012. To further solidify her expertise, Dr. Illingworth earned a Doctor of Health Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2020. Her commitment to education and mentorship has been recognized through the Resident Appreciation Award, which she received in both 2021 and 2024.

Since beginning her professional career as a Pathologists’ Assistant in July 2012, Dr. Illingworth has also served as an Assistant Professor at the UMMC School of Health Related Professions. Her role as a Pathologists’ Assistant Preceptor from 2013 to 2018 demonstrates her dedication to training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Dr. Illingworth is L.E.A.N certified and actively participates in several professional organizations, including the American Association of Pathologists’ Assistants, the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science,  the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the Group of Women in Medicine and Science. Her involvement reflects her commitment to advancing the field of pathology.

In addition to her professional achievements, Dr. Illingworth is dedicated to community service. She has participated in the See, Test and Treat program through the CAP Foundation, providing essential healthcare services to underserved communities in 2022 and 2023. Her role in inspiring young students during Germantown Career Day and serving on the Organ Recital Committee for High School Students highlights her commitment to education and mentorship outside of the classroom. Most recently, her involvement in the Summer of Service Dinner for the Ronald McDonald House showcases her dedication to supporting families in need.

In recognition of her influence in the field, Dr. Illingworth was named to The Pathologist’s Top 100 Power List in 2024. That same year, she authored the textbook “Manual of Pathologic Grossing: A Deliberative Approach,” published by Springer, which serves as a valuable resource for pathologists’ assistants, pathology residents, pathologists, and medical students.

Dr. Illingworth’s journey exemplifies the intersection of education, professional excellence, and community service, making her a vital asset to the UMMC and beyond.
