YNHH includes the 168-bed Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven, the 201-bed Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and the 76-bed Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, making it one of the largest hospitals in the world and the largest hospital in Connecticut. It is the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine and the Yale School of Nursing.
Barbara specializes in several areas of medicine, including cardiac care, PACU, and critical care. Cardiac care offers specialized care for people with acute or serious cardiac conditions. A post-anesthesia care unit, often abbreviated PACU, is a vital part of hospitals, ambulatory care centers, and other medical facilities. The PACU is a critical care unit where the patient’s vital signs are closely observed, pain management begins, and fluids are given. Critical care, also known as intensive care, involves the specialized care of patients whose conditions are life-threatening and who require comprehensive care and constant monitoring, usually in intensive care units.
Barbara received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1985.
When asked why she chose a career in nursing, Barbara stated that she always knew she wanted to be either a teacher or a nurse, but found that she was able to do both within the nursing field.
Barbara attributes her success to her upbringing. Her golden rule has always been respect and she has based her life around that. Although her instructors were tough, they taught her the necessary tools and skills she needed to succeed. To this day, Barbara strives for what she wants and needs by remaining determined and driven.
Barbara is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Founded in 1896, the ANA is the premier organization representing the interests of the nation’s 4 million registered nurses. It is at the forefront of improving the quality of health care for all.
A registered nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to the primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.
