Dr. Tekola had many interests growing up, but when it came time for her to choose a career, patient care felt like the most natural fit. The decision to specialize in gastroenterology was easy for her, as she discovered she was happiest when working in this particular field. She loves the ability to treat adult patients of all ages, the continuity of care that many other subspecialties do not allow for, and the range of diverse procedures.

Dr. Tekola currently serves patients at Gastroenterology Associates of Northern Virginia. As the largest practice in Northern Virginia, Gastroenterology Associates of Northern Virginia offer thorough, personalized care, including learning about each patient’s contributing health and lifestyle factors and the impact of gastrointestinal issues on everyday life. Throughout her childhood, Dr. Tekola traveled frequently with her family, experiencing first hand a variety of cultures and environments. Seeing the disparities in health care inspired her to become actively involved with several international health organizations. She was the youngest participant and one of only three US representatives invited by the World Gastroenterology Organization to participate in a collaborative forum for world leaders in education.

Dr. Tekola received her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She then went on to complete her residency with the University of Virginia Health System, followed by her fellowship training with the same University. During her training, Dr. Tekola also pursued an interest in research, working for the UVA Center for Global Health, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Dr. Tekola holds professional memberships with the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastrointestinal Association, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the World Gastroenterology Organization.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders; Hepatology is the branch of medicine that incorporates the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas as well as management of their disorders. As a Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, Dr. Tekola enjoys treating the full range of GI issues, and also has a special interest in liver disease and advanced endoscopy.
