Get to know Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Bonnie L. Beaver, who serves patients in Huntington, West Virginia.

An exceptional pediatric surgeon, Dr. Beaver is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Her academic interests include general surgery, pediatric surgery, trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency medical services for children.

In regards to her educational background, she received her medical degree from Ohio State University with AOA distinction, and completed her residency in general surgery at the same educational venue. She then went on to complete her residency in pediatric surgery at the University of Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University, and earned her Master of Public Health degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Finally, she completed her fellowship at Columbus Children’s Hospital, and received additional training from The Shock Trauma Unit.

An authority in her field, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery and pediatric surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Beaver is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP).

In order to remain current in her field, she is an active member of the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA), the APSA Committee on Trauma, the American Association of Surgery of Trauma, the Association of Academic Surgeons and Regional Committee for Poison and Injury Prevention for American Academy of Pediatrics, and Councilor of the West Virginia Chapter American College of Surgeons. She is also a member of several national committees and a Level I Trauma Center Reviewer for the American College of Surgeons Committee of Trauma for consultation and verification.

In her professional experience, Dr. Beaver served as Director of Pediatric Trauma Services (1987-1993) at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Columbus Children’s Hospital (1993-1995). She also was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (1987-1993) and at The Ohio State University College of Medicine (1993-1995).

Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Pediatric surgeons are trained as general surgeons who then go on to get specialty training to perform surgery on children and neonates with various congenital and oncologic issues.

On a more personal note, Dr. Beaver attributes her success to patient care and people skills. In her free time, she enjoys hiking and gardening.
