As such, she oversees 16 school nurses within 13 school districts; develops and reviews policies, protocols, and guidelines; serves as a CPR faculty member with TRIO Safety; monitors and evaluates school nurses; gathers data to provide the superintendent with health needs assessment each school year; conducts in-service training; attends administrative council meetings, oversees and schedules health screenings; serves on the state task force for developing & implementing Updated Medication Curriculum and Palliative End of Life Curriculum; implements stocking EpiPen and Naloxone in schools, establishes and conducts regular budget monitoring; and does staffing for each school, field trips, after-school activities, and overnight activities.

In the past, she has worked as a Lead Nurse at the Lee County School System (2008 – 2016), a School Nurse at the Lee County School System (1998 – 2016), and as a Pediatric/Child Health Clinic Nurse at the Lee County Department of Public Health Department (1994 – 1998). She has also spoken at the Delta Kappa Gamma Convention on grief counseling with school-age children, and has had an article published. 

Ever since she was three years old, Brenda wanted to be a nurse. She was a Candy Striper in high school, after which she went on to obtain her nursing degree from the Milwaukee Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in 1972.

With over five decades of experience in her field, she attributes her success to her love of children, teaching, and mentoring. She remains a member of the Alabama Education Association, the Alabama Asthma Coalition, and the National Association of School Nurses (having served as the Alabama State Director).

A Registered Nurse (RN) is a nurse who has graduated from a nursing program and met the requirements outlined by a country, state, province or similar licensing body to obtain a nursing license. RNs fulfill a variety of job duties. In addition to their primary role in treating and caring for patients, their responsibilities also include educating patients and the public about a variety of medical conditions, as well as providing emotional support and advice to the families of their patients. Other RN job functions include leadership, research, performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results, operating medical equipment, administering medications, recording patients’ symptoms and medical histories, and assisting with patient rehabilitation and follow-up.

Among her awards, achievements, and honors, Brenda was named Alabama School Nurse of the Year in 2005, and served as President of the Alabama Association of School Nurses from 2008 – 2009.
