Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Bret C. Crumpton, who serves patients in Columbus, Georgia.

Dr. Crumpton is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, glaucoma specialist, cataract and LASIK surgeon. He has been in practice at West Georgia Eye Care Center since 1999, operating out of the office in Columbus, Georgia.

He finds it rewarding to restore his patients’ vision through LASIK or cataract surgery and prevent permanent vision loss as he surgically and medically treats glaucoma.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Dr. Crumpton graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1993. He then went on to perform his residency

During his glaucoma fellowship, he received advanced training in glaucoma filtration surgery using antimetabolites (these aid in the success of surgery for appropriate candidates), glaucoma tube shunt surgery, glaucoma laser surgery, and cataract surgery.

On a professional level, Dr. Crumpton serves as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Muscogee County Medical Society, a counselor for the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American Osteopathic College of Otolaryngology (FAOCO).

Passionate about his profession, he is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology. It is a joint organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the eye (ophthalmologists) and to qualified DOs who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ears, nose, and throat (otolaryngologists).

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. Ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and may perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Dr. Crumpton and his family have been privileged to serve on medical mission trips to rural China, Jamaica, and Kenya, where he performed cataract and glaucoma surgery at The Lighthouse for Christ Eye Hospital and Clinic in Mombasa. He has also traveled with his church to Hyderabad, central India, and visited other rural cities in the subcontinent.

Church involvement and service remain a priority for Dr. Crumpton. He currently leads a local community group, and has served on his church board and greeting team. He has a grown son and daughter, two daughters at the University of Georgia, and an elementary-age son. He and his family live in Columbus, where they enjoy spending time together through church and school-related activities. Their recreational interests include traveling, playing soccer, scuba diving, snow skiing, and participating in water sports.
