He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in 2007, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of Colorado Denver, where he also obtained a Master of Science in Clinical Sciences. Dr. Fortune further honed his expertise with a fellowship in transplant hepatology at the said establishment, which he completed in 2012, solidifying his comprehensive knowledge in liver care.

Dr. Fortune’s research endeavors focus on improving clinical outcomes for patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension and enhancing the quality of care for liver transplant recipients. His significant contributions to the field have led to numerous publications in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and books. In his editorial roles, Dr. Fortune serves as Associate Editor for Liver Transplantation and Liver Section Editor for Digestive Disease Interventions, in addition to his involvement on the editorial board for Hepatology.

Board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology, and transplant hepatology, Dr. Fortune is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. His dedication to the field is further demonstrated through his active membership in several professional organizations, including the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Liver Foundation. 

Recognized for his excellence in teaching and mentorship, Dr. Fortune received the Kushlan Junior Faculty Award in 2015 and the Howard M. Spiro Digestive Disease Fellowship Teaching Award in 2016 from Yale School of Medicine.
