Get to know Infectious Diseases Clinical Pharmacist Brian Frescas, who serves patients in Texas.

A board-certified infectious diseases clinical pharmacist, Brian has been the Associate Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship at CHRISTUS Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi, Texas since August of 2021.

CHRISTUS Spohn Health System is South Texas’ largest hospital system, consisting of six hospital campuses and six family health centers throughout the Coastal bend. The health system is consistently ranked as a healthcare leader in the area and has received national recognition for several pioneering programs, including cardiac care, clinical excellence, and oncology.

After graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The University of Texas at El Paso in 2015, Brian went on to earn his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from The University of Texas at Austin – College of Pharmacy in 2019.

Furthering his training, he worked part-time as a pharmacy intern at VIP Pharmacy from June 2016 – August 2016, CVS pharmacy from August 2016 – February 2017, and at Walgreens from October 2017 – Septembre 2018.

As for his residency training, Brian served as a pharmacy resident with Methodist Healthcare System from June 2019 – June 2020. He then completed the Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in June of 2021. 

After taking and passing board examinations, Brian became a Board Certified Infectious Diseases Pharmacist (BCIDP) in December of 2021, which was awarded by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS). Board certification through the BPS is recognized as the gold standard for determining which pharmacists are qualified to contribute at advanced practice levels.

Pharmacy is the health science that links medical science with chemistry and it is charged with the discovery, production, control, disposal, safe and effective use of drugs. The practice of pharmacy requires excellent knowledge of drugs, their mechanism of action, side effects, interactions, mobility, and toxicity. An infectious diseases clinical pharmacist is an expert in antimicrobial pharmacotherapy. This includes antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic drugs.
