Get to know Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Bruce W. Austin, who serves patients in Sydney, New South Wales.

Dr. Austin is an outstanding oral and maxillofacial surgeon with 13 years of uniquely diversified experience in his field. He has been a physician in New South Wales since 1991, when he commenced his private specialist practice in Sydney, Australia. He was joined in practice by Dr. Alastair Stevenson in 1995. In 2000, the practice became Vintage Surgical Specialists upon relocating to “The Vintage”.

With a broad educational background, he qualified from the University of Queensland Dental School in 1975. He then spent three years as a Dental Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force.  In 1979, he commenced working at the University of Sydney as a tutor in oral surgery, oral medicine and radiology as well as part-time work in private practice. 

Subsequently, Dr. Austin gained a position in the NSW Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program in 1982 and also worked as a Lecturer in Oral Surgery at the University of Sydney Faculty of Dentistry. In 1987, he earned his Master of Dental Science degree, and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) in 1988.

In 1989, he spent a year as a lecturer in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery with the University of London, working at University College Hospital, Eastern Dental Hospital and the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. He then received a speciality fellowship in oral & maxillofacial surgery in 1991.

Among his other roles, Dr. Austin has had public hospital appointments at Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital since 1992, and at St. George Hospital from 1997 to 2006.  He has also been involved in various professional and hospital committees.

Active in academia, he has been involved in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and Registrar level for the past 20 years. He has been involved in oral & craniofacial implant surgery since 1984 and conducted the early training courses for the University of Sydney. He lectures for the University of Sydney, and is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer for the Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implants and Graduate Diploma in Clinical Dentistry (Oral Implants) at the Charles Sturt University.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws. It is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat conditions, defects, injuries, and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and face. Their training involves a four-year graduate degree in dentistry and the completion of a minimum four-year hospital surgical residency program.

Happily married, Dr. Austin and his wife, Christine, have three beautiful daughters. In his free time, he enjoys music, travel, books, and cycling.
