Carey A. Patrick, OD, an Optometrist with Fairview EyeCare, PA

Get to know Optometrist Dr. Carey A. Patrick, who serves patients in Allen, Texas.

Practicing full medical model optometric care, Dr. Patrick is an experienced optometrist serving as the Owner & CEO of Fairview EyeCare, PA in Allen, Texas. She encourages parents to bring in their children for comprehensive eye exams— beginning in early childhood.

On the opposite end of the patient spectrum, she enjoys helping senior citizens experience good vision—particularly when that keeps them safe while driving and helps them remain active participants in their communities. She is also passionate about helping athletes find sport-specific eyewear to help them compete. “I love what I do, probably in part because no two days are ever the same” she said.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Patrick obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry. Before long, she became board-certified in therapeutic optometry by the American Board of Optometry, whose mission is to advance the quality of eye care by promoting excellence through education, assessment, practice, and professionalism for the benefit of all patients.

An active volunteer in both her community and in her profession, Dr. Patrick is currently serving on the Texas Optometry Board, a position of public trust to which Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed her in 2015. In this position, she protects the public and guides doctors of optometry in ethical performance of their duties and responsibilities as healthcare providers.

Professionally, she has served the profession of optometry by appointment to the Third Party Executive Committee of the American Optometric Association whose mission is coordinating and negotiating professional optometrists’ participation in medical insurance, state-funded insurance, and private insurance programs. She has also served as Director of the Texas Optometric Association, Chair of the Texas Third Party Committee, Chair of the Texas Public Health Committee, and as President of the Northeast Texas Optometric Society.

As a participating provider for InfantSEE, Dr. Patrick actively promotes infant vision care and other public awareness programs for healthy childrens’ vision development. She supports the Collin County community by donating her professional services through VisionUSA, which is the national public health program for better eye health and vision care for underserved working families.

In order to stay up to date in her field, she remains a member of the American Optometric Association, the Pediatric and Binocular Vision Council, the American Optometric Association Cornea and Contact Lens Specialty Section, and the Ocular Nutrition Society.

Among her greatest achievements, Dr. Patrick is the recipient of the 2015 Mollie Armstrong Award for outstanding service to the profession of optometry in Texas. She is also the 2002 Outstanding Graduate Professional for her research and treatment of Aniseikonia. In 2003, her UHCO professors and peers nominated her for a Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry, the professional organization which recognizes outstanding contributors to optometry and the vision care profession.

Optometry is a health care profession that involves examining the eyes and applicable visual systems for defects or abnormalities, as well as diagnosing and managing eye disease. Optometrists are healthcare professionals who provide primary eye care through comprehensive eye examinations to detect and treat various visual abnormalities and eye diseases. Being a regulated profession, an optometrist’s scope of practice may differ depending on the location. Thus, disorders or diseases detected outside the treatment scope of optometry (i.e. those requiring certain surgical interventions) are referred out to relevant medical professionals for proper care, more commonly to ophthalmologists who are physicians that specialize in the tertiary medical and surgical care of the eye. Optometrists typically work closely together with other eye care professionals, such as ophthalmologists and opticians, to deliver quality and efficient eye care to the general public.

In the community, Dr. Patrick serves on the Board of Directors for the Allen-Fairview Chamber of Commerce, is a Founding Member of the Fairview Economic Development Council, and is a Charter Member of the Fairview Rotary Club. She works with the Allen Lion’s Club and continues to volunteer her professional services with their annual mobile eye clinic.

A lifetime member of Girl Scouts, Dr. Patrick served as troop leader for both of her daughters’ troops until they graduated from Lovejoy High School. She supports the University of Texas at Dallas Alumni & Parents Assoc., Pepperdine Waves Alumni & Parents Association, and the University of Edinburgh Parents Club. For eight years, she danced in the half-time show at the Houston Rockets NBA basketball game. Her performances there were dedicated in charitable support of the SGK Breast Cancer Research Foundation. She and her family relocated to Fairview, from Houston, in 2007.
