Get to know Urologist Dr. Carl A. Olsson, who serves patients in the State of New York. 

Dr. Olsson is an internationally renowned, board-certified urologist whose experience in the field spans more than 40 years. Currently, he serves as the Chief Medical Officer of Integrated Medical Professionals, PLLC, one of the largest urology group practices in the United States.

Located in Farmingdale, New York, Integrated Medical Professionals (IMP) was formed by physicians committed to providing the highest level of quality medical services available in locations convenient to the patients. This cooperative approach has enabled the doctors in IMP to continue to practice in the neighborhoods they have been serving for years, while affording them access to technology and services that are just not available to most medical groups.

Many of the doctor’s career accomplishments and affiliations have established him as a leader in the field of urology. He serves as John K. Lattimer Professor and Chairman of Urology Emeritus of Columbia University Medical Center, and as the Director of Quality Initiatives and Strategy in the Department of Urology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He also continues to enjoy an active clinical practice focusing on urologic oncology at Second Opinion Urology in North Hills, New York. 

A 1963 graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr. Olsson was the first to use immunotherapy in bladder cancer and made technological advances with the development of the first laser cystoscope to diagnose bladder pathology and the first flow rate nomogram for the interpretation of urinary flow data.

Presently, he has just completed his position as Editor of Urology Practice, the newest journal sponsored by the American Urological Association, dedicated to the study of diseases of the genitourinary system. He has served as President of the American Board of Urology, the Society of University Urologists, the Intersociety Council, the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, the Society of Urologic Oncology, the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons and the New York Section of the American Urological Association as well as on the Board of Directors of the American Urological Association. 

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine, Dr. Olsson remains a member of several associations and societies, including the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American Urological Association (honorary), the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (honorary), the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons, and the American Surgical Association. 

Furthermore, he is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology, whose mission is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, as well as to work with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Having built a reputation of excellence, Dr. Olsson has authored more than 400 published books, book chapters, and articles in scientific journals such as The Journal of Urology©, Urology, The Journal of Clinical Oncology, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He is the recipient of 25 honors and awards, including the prestigious Hugh Hampton Young, Gold Cystoscope, and Distinguished Contribution awards from the American Urological Association. Other awards include the CaP CURE Research Award), the Ferdinand C. Valentine Medal from the New York Academy of Medicine, Dr. Michael E. Debakey Award from the Baylor College of Medicine, and the National Kidney Foundation’s John K. Lattimer Award.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands.
