Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Chance J. Henderson, who serves patients in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Dr. Henderson is a dual board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who focuses on sports medicine & hand and upper extremities. He is in practice with Colorado Center of Orthopaedic Excellence, operating out of various offices in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

His areas of clinical focus include shoulder joint repair, fracture care, arthroscopy and ligament repair, deformity correction, treatment of arthritis, revision surgeries, tendon disorders and treatment, carpal tunnel syndrome, hand & wrist diagnosis, and elbow pain.

Back in 1989, Dr. Henderson enlisted in the US Air Force and, after basic training, went to technical school to become a pharmacy technician.  Afterwards, he was assigned to Reese AFB and was able to obtain an appointment to the US Air Force Academy less than a year later where he graduated in 1996 as a 2nd Lieutenant. He recruited for the Air Force for one year while competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He then attended pilot training at Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training at Sheppard AFB and went on to fly the F-15C from Kadena AB, Japan where he was a mission commander.  

In 2002, Dr. Henderson went to medical school at University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After graduating with his medical degree in 2006, he completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery from 2006-2011 at the Uniformed Health Education Consortium at Ft Sam Houston in San Antonio. He then attended a year-long fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Upon completion of his orthopaedic training, Dr. Henderson was assigned to USAFA and the 10MDG. From 2012 to present, he served first as Chief of Hand Surgery, then as the Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, and finally as the 10MDG Chief of Surgery. He has been a team physician during his entire time at USAFA.

Board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and surgery of the hand, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. 

Remaining deeply engaged in various professional associations, Dr. Henderson is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Colorado Medical Society, and the El Paso County Medical Society.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

During the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on US soil, Dr. Henderson undertook a deployment to Turkey to participate in patrolling the Northern No Fly Zone over Northern Iraq. In recognition of his outstanding contributions and dedicated service, he was honored with the Air Medal for logging over 100 hours of F-15C combat time.

With a career spanning over three decades, encompassing roles as an enlisted technician, cadet, fighter pilot, and now as a surgeon, he epitomizes a deep-rooted passion for both the United States and the United States Air Force.
