Dr. Lucore, an interventional cardiologist, is President of St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center. Founded in 1922 by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, St. Francis Hospital is New York State’s only specialty designated cardiac center and offers one of the leading cardiac care programs in the nation, with specialties in heart surgery, cardiac catheterization and angioplasty, and the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms. After being appointed President of The Heart Center, Dr. Lucore stated “I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead St. John’s and advance the Hospital Sisters’ healing ministry in central Illinois. St. John’s has a long and proud tradition of delivering exceptional care to the communities we serve and I look forward to strengthening that legacy.”
Prior to becoming President of St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center, Dr. Lucore was President and CEO of St. John’s Hospital – the flagship hospital of the Hospital Sisters Health System. The network has 15 hospitals and over 1,000 employed physicians located in both Illinois and Wisconsin. And prior to becoming CEO of St. John’s Hospital, he was Secretary to the Board of Directors and Executive Director of the hospital’s Prairie Institute. The nationally recognized institute, being one of the country’s oldest Colleges of Nursing, has a renowned reputation for providing comprehensive cardiac care.
Dr. Lucore began his career in 1989 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Interventional Cardiologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO before joining Prairie Cardiovascular in 1992. During his tenure with Prairie, he assumed various leadership roles including Secretary of Prairie’s Board of Directors and Executive Director for Prairie Heart Institute at St. John’s.
Dr. Lucore is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Interventional Cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, as well as Chair elect on the American Hospital Association’s section for Metropolitan Hospital Council.
After graduating from Colgate University, Dr. Lucore received his M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine. Thereafter, he went on to complete his residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, followed by his fellowship training in Cardiology at Washington University-Barnes Jewish Hospital. Dr. Lucore also has an M.B.A. from the Olin School of Business at Washington University.
Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease and electrophysiology. As a cardiologist, Dr. Lucore specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system. He understands that care coordination is ultimately about what is best for each individual patient in terms of their health and well-being.
Dr. Lucore and his family have been active supporters of the Lincolnland Down Syndrome Society and local chapter of the Special Olympics, where they established the Alex Lucore Athlete of the Year program.
